iRex 1000 series e-book readers boast A4 resolution
The official launch of the iRex 1000 Series e-reader has taken place in Amsterdam and this design differs from the earlier iLiad format in being a huge 10 1/2 inches diagonal allowing a full A4 page to be displayed on the page with legible text! This makes the 1000-series the largest format readers on the market at the moment.
The 1000 series consists of:
- DR1000: $737
- DR1000S: $884
- DR1000SW: no price announced yet
The only difference between the S model and the base device is a stylus and Wacom digitizer but the DR1000SW comes with Bluetooth and WiFi (3G has not yet been confirmed). All the models are 1.2 cm thick and 570g since the cases are made entirely of plastic. The S and SW models also allow the user to draw on the screen.
The software is based on Linux and it is intended to support a wide range of third-party software from launch (are you listening, Apple?). iRex also claims that the 1000 series is able to read ‘all common formats’ including Word, PDF and PowerPoint.
The battery used is a lithium iod which iRex claims ‘lasts for days’. Storage is via SD card with 1GB fitted a standard but there’s also mini USB port to connect to a Mac or PC.
