Lumix launches DMC-G1: the World’s smallest 4/3 format camera
September 12th, 2008Panasonic claims to have released the World’s first Micro Four Thirds system camera, the Lumix DMC G1, weighing in at only 385 grams making it only half the weight of typical DSLRs!
This means, in effect, that the G1 is the smallest digital interchangeable lens camera, achieving its low weight and smaller size by dispensing with the internal mirror and prism found in traditional SLRs. Viewing is instead achieved via a full-time electronic view-finder with an eye detector which senses when the photographer is looking through it. This allows the LCD to be automatically switched off when not in use.
Despite its diminutive size it still boasts a 12.1 megapixel sensor, a 460,000 dot resolution LCD that can swivel 180° horizontally and 270° vertically.
Other features include:
- Contrast Auto Focus
- Multiple area AF (23 focus areas)
- Face detection
- AF tracking
- Venus Engine HD imaging processor
- HDMI Output
- Internal dust reduction
The Lumix DMC G1 will available in black, red and blue in mid-November 2008 as a kit with either of the following lenses:
- Lumix G VARIO 14-45mm/F3.5-5.6 ASPH/MEGA O.I.S
- Lumix G VARIO 45-200mm/F4.0-5.6/MEGA O.I.S
David Briganti, National Marketing Manager of Panasonic says:
“With the LUMIX G1, we are filling a void that has existed for a long time in the digital camera market, because consumers wanted the power of an SLR, but previous models were bulky and inconvenient. The LUMIX G answers this challenge as consumers can benefit from the flexibility of changing lenses; a quick Auto Focus; and a sensor that produces high-quality photos. By packing all those powerful assets into an extremely compact body with easy-to-use features familiar to point-and-shoot users, we are excited about G, as it brings new possibilities to the consumer.”
Pricing for the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G1 and its Micro Four Thirds accessories will be announced in early October.
