November 4th, 2007

Android a new mobile platform will be announced by Google tomorrow (Monday 5th November) at a press conference according to the Wall Street Journal at which the company will also set out plans surrounding the Google Phone.

Google has in place several agreements with mobile phone manufacturers and network operators and the other parties will be announced at the press conference as well as details of the Android control system. The names Sprint and T-Mobile have been leaked as likely network partners and it is known that HTC of Taiwan are a favoured manufacturer; others may include Samsung, LG and Sony Ericsson.

The phone is expected to run Android on Linux with a number of mobile applications from Google themselves. There will also soon be a software development kit for developers who want to produce their own apps. This would appear to be targeted at Apple who will only release their SDK in February. In fact the Google platform may threaten Apple across the board being an open system with far fewer restrictions than those imposed by Apple on its consumers and developers.

Google is unlikely to make Apple’s mistake of under-specing and over-pricing it’s phone and services so expect to see a lot of gPhones around in the near future.
