Downloadable PS2 games on PS3 might actually work!
February 14th, 2008We all know that Sony’s attempts to make PS3 backwards-compatible for PS2 games ‘by software’ has been a dismal failure. Yes, the original PS3s had built-in hardware for PS2 software but these early models are now hard to find and the later models use ’software emulation’ which is, not to put too fine a point on it, BAD! But Sony might have the answer…
Sony is reported to be ready to launch a download service from which PS3 owners can download PS2 games. These games have been written to work with the PS3 emulation software. Eric Lempel, director of the Sony PlayStation Network said:
“We haven’t talked about that yet, but there are possibilities through technology and software emulation to make that possible.”
It is even possible that the new PS2/PS3 games will be tweaked to high-resolution thus taking advantage of the PS3 hardware.
This strategy might help Sony to sell more PS3 consoles and may determine the future of the PlayStation Network.
