Laptops to benefit from Nvidia’s SLI
January 28th, 2008SLI (Scalable Link Interface) enables multi-GPUs (Graphics Processing Units) in the same machine to cooperate virtually doubling or tripling the speed of the system. Recent advances in technology mean that these cards will be spreading from the desktop world to laptops and notebooks in the very near future.
Nvidia has announced that the following manufacturers will be recipients of the new cards:
- AIRIS
- Alienware
- Chiligreen
- Cizmo
- Cybersystem
- Dell
- Ergo
- Eurocom
- Gateway
- MouseComputer
- Nexoc
- Novatech
- Pioneer Computers
- Plaisio
- Rock
- Sager
- XXODD
Alienware will be front of the queue with their Area 51 m17x and Area 51 m15x being the first to be equipped with dual 8800M GTX cards.
This represents a major advance as SLI systems have been up to now very big and very hot! But Nvidia has squeezed a system down to laptop size and claim that the 8800M GTX is the fastest laptop GPU in the world and can deliver the best gaming experience for hardcore gamers particularly for the new generation of DirectX 10 games. In industry-standard benchmarks for GPUs the 8800M GTS scored best in class.
Mark Rein, vice president of Epic Games said:
“I am absolutely amazed by the sheer performance of the new GeForce 8800M GTX-powered notebooks. These next-gen machines run Unreal Tournament 3 fantastically even at HD resolutions of 1920×1200. I’m ordering one!”
And Cervat Yerli, CEO of Crytek:
“With the new GeForce GPUs, NVIDIA is bringing gamers the ultimate gaming experience available on a notebook. For gamers wanting to experience the advanced visual realism of Crysis the new GeForce 8800M powered machines are the ones to get.”
Now we just need a 1.5mm thick version so Apple can squeeze one into a MacBook Air!
